We stock Genie-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, and most replacements are installed same-day for $130 – $250, parts and labor included. A written price is handed to you before any work starts, and the repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Most Pasadena homeowners discover the failure the same way: a loud snap, the door suddenly hanging crooked, or one side dropping faster than the other when the opener runs.
Here’s what’s happening. The cable is the steel line that connects the bottom of your door to the drum mounted on the torsion shaft above. When the cable frays and snaps, or the drum grooves wear out and let the cable slip, the door loses tension on one side. The opener keeps pulling. The door binds. If you keep pressing the button, you can bend the track, break panels, or worse. This isn’t a lubricate-and-ignore situation. It’s a replace-the-part-soon situation.
Which Genie Models This Applies To
Genie’s cable and drum design spans most residential models sold in the last 25 years, including the IntelliG, TriloG, SilentMax, ChainMax, and older Pro line systems. The compatibility gotcha: Genie uses a specific drum profile matched to the door’s spring system, not a universal part. If someone throws a generic drum on a Genie torque tube, the cable seats wrong, winds unevenly, and fails again within months.
There are two ways to confirm what you need. Look for the model label on the opener head or the sticker on the door’s edge near the bottom panel. Or measure the drum’s outside diameter and count the grooves. We handle that matching for you when we arrive. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for Genie cables, a quality aftermarket 7×19 aircraft-grade cable in the correct length and gauge works as well as OEM at a lower cost. For drums, we recommend OEM or a matched aftermarket casting, because the groove pitch has to be exact. We carry both on the truck for most Genie residential setups.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door hangs uneven or crooked when opening. One cable has stretched or slipped off its groove. The door is being lifted by one cable instead of two, which torques the panels and rails.
- You can see frayed strands or a “birdcage” bulge in the cable. This is fatigue failure. Garage door cables in Pasadena’s dry heat lose their internal lubrication over several years and individual strands start snapping. Once you see one broken strand, the rest follow.
- The cable has jumped off the drum entirely and is wrapped around the shaft. The drum grooves are worn shallow, or the cable tension was never set right. Running the door in this state scrapes the shaft and can bend the torsion tube.
- A grinding or scraping sound comes from the drum area during travel. A worn or cracked drum is chewing the cable. The sound is the cable riding over damaged groove edges.
- The door slams down hard on one side when closing. A cable snapped clean through and the remaining cable can’t control the descent. This is an emergency-stop situation: pull the red release handle and leave the door shut until we can get there.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Pasadena, a Genie cable replacement runs $130 – $250 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing one cable or both, and whether the drum needs to be swapped along with it. If the drum is cracked or grooved out, typically both cables and both drums should be done as a set. That’s the $220 – $250 end of the range, and it’s the fix that actually lasts.
Every quote includes the part, the labor, cable tensioning, drum alignment, a full door balance check, and our written 365-day guarantee. Here’s the price table:
- Single Genie cable replacement: $130 – $160 installed
- Pair of Genie cables: $170 – $210 installed
- Cable plus one drum: $190 – $230 installed
- Both cables, both drums: $220 – $250 installed
What drives the range is drum condition and whether the door’s spring system needs adjustment after we’re done. We tell you the exact number before we start, and it doesn’t move. No discovery fees, no surprise upcharges at the door.
DIY or Call Us?
If you want to look at the cable and drum yourself, you can do that safely with the door closed. Look for fraying, check whether the cable sits inside the drum groove, see if the drum wobbles when the door moves. That’s the inspection part. The replacement part is where it gets dangerous.
The cable on a Genie torsion system runs under hundreds of pounds of tension. If you unwind the drum without properly releasing the spring, that cable becomes a whip. We’re not going to give you step-by-step instructions here, because the honest advice is: don’t. Let a trained tech do the swap in under an hour. If you’re in Pasadena, that’s us. Call (626) 788-0967 and we’ll give you a clear quote before anything else happens.
FAQs
Genie cables typically last 7 to 10 years in Pasadena’s climate, but doors used multiple times daily or exposed to direct afternoon heat wear faster. We see failure earlier than that on doors without regular maintenance, because dry cables develop internal corrosion before visible rust shows.
No, and you shouldn’t try. A frayed cable can’t be spliced safely. Once strands begin breaking, the cable’s effective strength is already compromised and a snap is imminent. Call (626) 788-0967 and we’ll replace it before it takes the drum or the panel with it.
Most Genie cable and drum jobs take 45 to 75 minutes from start to finish. We arrive with the parts on the truck, so there’s no second trip for the right part. Expect a written quote first, then the work, then a walkthrough of what we did.
We stock the common Genie residential sizes on the truck, including aftermarket 7×19 cables and matched drums for most IntelliG, TriloG, and SilentMax setups. If your door takes an unusual drum profile, we’ll have it within one business day and will tell you that upfront before you decide anything.
